Valley and Adventist Health Delano Calif. The departure comes as part of administrative cutbacks at the organization, the Tehachapi News reported April With Mr. Butler's departure, Edward Martin, who joined Adventist Health Tehachapi Valley in August as administrative director of operations, will serve as site administrator, and Dr.

Adventist Health has been undergoing a restructuring systemwide amid the financial effects of the pandemic and the organization's planned transition from a solely hospital-centered organization to a health company.

In January, the health system announced that it shuffled its senior leadership team to further support its employees, mission and transformation strategy, and that its president and chief strategy officer resigned. Moving forward, Mr. Examples include:. We should take opportunities to identify values in many topics we cover. For example, when talking about careers we might identify values that we could pursue in any work.

Examples are a love of what we are doing, integrity, personal development, and a search for what is rewarding in the task itself. We should encourage students to constantly examine and identify the values expressed and implied in all aspects of PDHPE. Sample questions are:. Provide opportunities for students to develop leadership and responsibility.

Whether good or poor academically or physically, all students need to develop leadership and responsibility. It is important that all students have oportunity to succeed in leading groups.

For example:. This consists of a series of opinion statements designed to provide some idea of how intense student feelings are either for or against a given topic or issue. There is now too much technology in the game of cricket. There should be consistent drug testing for all kinds of sport. Help students make value judgments about activities and choices which relate to lifestyle.

We may continually assist students to both identify and form criteria for judging the worth of these activities and choices. PDHPE addresses many components of lifestyle such as safe living, lifestyle diseases, and attitudes to sex and the use of drugs and alcohol.

Sample questions may include:. On what basis do you make your judgment? What is the social issue here? What is the Bible standard on this issue? Why does the Bible take this view? We can use media reports such as news items, and TV programs to raise issues and weigh them up, highlighting values involved. For example we may examine how the media promotes attitudes to diet. More specifically, we could look at marketing startegies, advertisements, and cartoons which feature sugery breakfast cereals.

The teacher constantly models values such as enthusiasm and care in procedures, and attitudes such as the conviction that all people are equal before God, and that we should treat others as such. The teacher models values in many other ways as well. Following are some suggestions about being an effective Christian role model. We can help students weigh up values by asking them what to do next in problem situations.

An example of this approach is to present a case study of how bad diet is causing a family to suffer worsening health.

Then require groups of students to solve the problem by suggesting ways to break the cylce of poor eating which is causing the situation. Projects on social issues such as drugs in sport can include a valuing component. An issue is a point or idea in question or dispute. Issues involve competing values and their resolutions reflect world views. We may for example raise issues such as the value of pursuing different kinds of exercise to have students explore the tensions between desirable but opposing values.

Ranking requires the listing of values statements that students are asked to rank in order of importance or commitment, according to their own or an adopted values position. An example is to list in order of priority four values concerned with the maintenance of good health.

When students act out roles, they are forced to think about the values the role represents. For example, we could have a student act out the role of a teenager having difficulty resisting peer pressure to take some drug. Simulations force students to cast themselves in life-like problem situations. For example, students can be asked to simulate what may happen when a teenager and his or her parents do not possess sufficient skills of conflict resolution. Visiting speakers present value positions on many topics.

For example, a sports personality from the local area can speak about his or her experience of what it takes to succeed in in sport.

If possibe use a computer data base to build profiles. Various aspects of PDHPE can be monitored and evaluated in a profile, with provision for periodic feedback. Such aspects may include use of uniform, participation in games, sense of strategy in sport etc.

These need not be percentage-based, and need not compare students. Self-assessment, or pair assessment in the form of a contract may be used. When students are asked to officiate or lead out in an area of interest or expertise, they learn evaluative skills, and can be subjectively assessed. Particular areas of the program such as Health Education and Foundations of Physical Education lend themselves more to traditional testing methods.

Whenever possible objective testing methods should be used. However there are components of this subject where subjective assessment is inevitable. Other national bodies have their own set of criteria for evaluation. Australian Schools Fitness Tests is one example. It is necessary to devise a variety of assessment tasks to provide a balanced perspective of student development in PDHPE. Areas of assessment may be built into a percentage total like the following:. Content Assessment. This is only a guide which can be modified to suit your school situation.

This profile will allow student progress to be clearly seen and encouraged. This section of the framework provides a brief listing of subject content in seven key learning areas of PDHPE. These seven areas appear in various state syllabi. The options are provided for in the freedom of chocie of individual, dual and team games. Selected from major and minor games of national, local and ethnic interests.

Listed below are some basic competition guidelines for teachers involved in organizing games and sporting events of various kinds. The benefits of healthy competition are to a large extent dependent on teacher leadership before the competition commences. Teachers demonstrate attitudes to competition in the way they organize their teams and discuss tactics before and after interschool games.

The planning phase is critical because there teachers can guide attitudes to winning, losing, and relating to other teams. They can also ensure that their students practise skills and performance, and that they behave in an orderly and sportsmanlike way.

The framework committee endorses the organization of interschool sporting events between Adventist schools, and between Adventist schools and non-Adventist schools. The aim of interschool competition is to encourage students to improve themselves, and to encourage social interaction, participation, cooperation, and the ability to accept results graciously.

It may also act as an opportunity for participation at higher levels of their chosen discipline. The principle of involvement And participation is vital to staging healthy competition. Teachers should strive for the inclusion of as many students as possible, and they should utilise a variety of events. They can also demonstrate charitable attitudes in the way they choose teams.

Here they can discourage unfavourable attitudes to players of less than average ability. Teachers should explain to students their reasons for organizing competition in particular ways, and they should identify the values which underpin these approaches.

The issuing of rewards is an activity which demonstrates what teachers value. We suggest that if certificates are given, then all should receive them irrespective of their place in the race or match.

Certificates need not indicate the place of the participant, even though place getters first, second and third can be recognized in some way. Also rewards should be placed on personal performances, rather than on placings.

Teachers should recognize that the organization and running of actual sporting events only comprise part of the competition issue. For example, the reporting of results and presentation of awards also have large implications for influencing student attitudes. Cheerleading should not be organized with specified leaders, nor should it appear organized at all. However the positive support of peers should be actively encouraged.

We recommend that teachers discourage teacher- or student-initiated cheer squads. In all competition, it is important to encourage all participants to do their best. We believe that sporting competitions can generate good school spirit. The key motivator for this spirit is participation - a value teachers should keep emphasizing.

In organising ongoing competition, round robin tournaments provide greater participation of students. In these tournaments all individuals or teams play everybody else. Organizers should avoid elimination tournaments which can breed exclusiveness. Teams can be mixed up so that different groups male, female, staff etc can interact. Negligence can lead to legal problems. Below are some guidelines for teachers.

The full text of these guidelines can be found in the publication Guidelines for Avoiding Legal Problems. A Quick Reference for Busy Teachers. South Pacifc Education Department The actual test of whether a teacher is guilty of negligence in given circumstances can be stated as:. Is there a legal duty of care involved?

Has there been a breach of this duty? Did the breach lead to recompensable damage? Was there any contributing conduct on the part of the injured person? Was the teacher acting within the course of his or her employment? All excursions must have the approval of the Principal.

All teachers participating must accept responsibility for the students. A signed permission note is required. This form in no way relieves or indemnifies the teachers of their responsibilities. Where it is considered necessary, the site of a proposed excursion should be inspected beforehand to identify potential problems or dangers and to determine the level of supervision necessary to avoid the risk of injury.

Procedures outlined by Risk Management Service are to be strictly adhered to. These are designed, apart from the need to aid the injured, to safeguard the teacher from possible consequences of any legal action which might be initiated by the parents:.

Teachers should give first aid as far as possible. Do not attempt to move a child. A message conveyed by oral means must be confirmed by a note indicating that the parents were so informed.

The injured child should be kept under reasonable observation. In most cases the child should be allowed home with the guardian or parent. In serious cases where medial attention is obviously needed and the parents are not available, or the person nominated by the parent this is found on the pupil information card , the teacher should send for the doctor, or take the child to a doctor and inform the parents as soon as possible of the action taken.

If these are carefully heeded many unpleasant situations, where suspicion might be attached to innocent behaviour, will be avoided. Never be left alone with a child of either sex. Never detain a single child. Wherever possible avoid at all times conveying one pupil in your car - unless accompanied by another teacher of the opposite gender to yourself.

In rendering first aid to pupils, wherever possible take care to see that another member of staff or a senior pupil is present. It is preferable for a female teacher to attend a female student.

Inspections of toilets and isolated sections of the school should be carried out at times when you are sure no pupils are present. Make every effort not to be alone with a child, or even two children, in the school building before or after school.

A habit can grow out of having students helping you. If you have to discuss a personal problem with a child, do so in the playground where others can see what is happening. Never touch a child of either sex apart from inevitable situations such as P. In dealing with parents and children, a teacher should be polite, firm, always under control. Never allow a display of temperament in front of either the parents or children.

Teachers do so at their own risk. If teachers intend to transport students in their own vehicles, it is important that written parental permission be sought prior to the event and the vehicle be insured to the level required by Risk Management Service. Issues Discussion of issues is a vehicle for considering many values. Strategies for Teaching Valuing Below is a list of some suggestions for teaching values. Application of Values This tactic involves putting values into action.

Cartoons Cartoons can convey values. Debate By debating issues such as meat eating versus non meat eating, avoidance of premarital sex, the use of drugs in sport, and eating or not eating iron supplemetns in our diet, we can draw out a range of values. Demonstration We are constantly demonstrating values in the classroom. Case Studies Case studies examine values in operation.

Clarify Values Help students clarify the value positions shown in their own and others' responses to questions. Consequences Chart A consequence chart is a way of recording the consequences of decisions and actions based on the values individuals and groups hold. Action Short-term Consequences Long-term Consequences 1 Drinking while driving 2 Bending the knees while lifting 3 Precautions of using electrical appliances Students complete the table and discuss the consequences of these actions.

Decision-making Plan and develop situations where students can make positive decisions without threat from peers or teachers. Discuss Issues Discuss value-laden life issues which arise anytime during classwork, whether discussion is teacher-initiated or student-initiated, formal or informal, and which impact on students. Expectations We teach values by insisting that we have high expectations of students.

Explanation We often have a duty to explain why we hold value positions, or why values are important to students. Field Experience Field experiences such as an excursion to gymnastics events, interschool competitions and fitness testing venues can highlight values such as persererance in training , responsibility for our health, or cooperation.

Hypotheticals We may pose hypothetical problems for students to solve. Identifying Possible Action This strategy involves identifying responses to a particular values position and is the forerunner to taking action. Leadership and Responsibility Provide opportunities for students to develop leadership and responsibility. Likert Scale This consists of a series of opinion statements designed to provide some idea of how intense student feelings are either for or against a given topic or issue.

Shortly after their marriage, they were introduced to a tract by Joseph Bates, a Seventh-Day Baptist. It convinced them of the sacredness of the Sabbath, and they began to observe Saturday as the Sabbath. Six months later, in April , Ellen had a vision in which she was shown the Heavenly sanctuary with a halo light around the fourth commandment, establishing it in her mind as the most important of the Ten Commandments.

Its purpose was to disseminate Adventist and Sabbatarian doctrines. Their publication was instrumental in helping the handful of remaining Millerites to coalesce into a distinctive group. In they adopted the name, Seventh-Day Adventist Church. They formally incorporated in with approximately 3, members located in churches.

Ellen White never held any official title as head of the church, but she was always acknowledged as its spiritual leader. She claimed to have the spirit of prophecy, and she claimed that her messages were directly from God. I do not write one article in the paper expressing merely my own ideas. They are what God has opened before me in vision the precious rays of light shining from the throne.

Ellen White died in July at the age of She and her husband are buried in Battle Creek, Michigan. Church membership reached one million between and , and it hit 5 million in At the turn of this century, the church claimed Approximately one million of those reside in the United States. Doug Batchelor is a very gifted communicator who heads up a team of 12 evangelists who conduct media-spectacular prophecy conferences all across America. The estimated number of homes the program can now reach within the U.

It provides a hour satellite service that broadcasts the programs of all major Adventist ministries around the world. There is also a Three Angels Radio Network.

Both of these networks are privately run as non-profits, and neither is an official arm of the SDA Church. Despite its phenomenal growth in recent years, the SDA has suffered some major internal disputes. This caused a number of pastors, and even entire congregations, to leave the SDA. Others were asked to leave. The SDA responded by removing Dr. White were flagrantly plagiarized.

The reverberations continue to this day. In August Doug Batchelor sent out an email message in which he made an amazing admission:. According to the General Conference Office of Archives and Statistics, in the past ten years alone, over 1.

Instead of returning to earth on October 22, , as William Miller predicted, Jesus entered the Holy of Holies in Heaven and began a review of the works of all believers who have ever lived to determine how faithful they were to the commandments of God. Otherwise it will be impossible for them to exercise the faith which is essential at this time or to occupy the position which God designs for them to fill.

Twisting Bible Prophecy There is absolutely no valid biblical basis for this bizarre doctrine. As pointed out earlier, it is based upon a misinterpretation and misapplication of Daniel The prophecy concerns the actions of Antiochus Epiphanes BC.

This led to the Maccabean revolt which succeeded in reconquering Jerusalem. In BC the Jews cleansed and rededicated the Temple. Hanukkah is the eight day festival celebrating this event. Applying this prophecy to the Heavenly sanctuary is ridiculous.

Since when has the Holy of Holies in Heaven ever been defiled or trampled down? Since when has it needed to be restored? SDA teachers defend this conversion on the basis of Numbers and Ezekiel where prophets were specifically told to interpret days in their prophecies as years.

But those verses have no application to Daniel Jesus entered the Holy of Holies in Heaven immediately after His Ascension, and not in Hebrews , , , , 24 and His atoning work is not continuing in Heaven. It was finished on the Cross John and Romans Believers will never be subjected to a judgment of their works to determine their salvation John and Hebrews There is no condemnation for the person who has placed his or her faith in Jesus as Lord and Savior Romans The believer can be assured of salvation 1 John As believers walk in faith, they experience a continual cleansing of sin by the blood of Jesus 1 John Instead, Jesus must continue His atoning work by evaluating the works of each believer.

This whole concept is nothing but a thinly veiled form of works salvation. Think of it the SDA member is taught that he can never be sure of his salvation until the judgment work of Jesus is completed and he is certified as one whose works validate his salvation. Their robes must be spotless, their character must be purified from sin by the blood of sprinkling.

Through the grace of God and their own diligent effort, they must be conquerors in the battle with evil. How could a true prophet of God speak such unbiblical words? The Bible says we are saved by grace through faith and not by works Ephesians When his prophecy failed, he took responsibility for his mistake and repented for all the grief and embarrassment he had caused.

Sabbatarianism The other distinctive SDA doctrine is the one contained in the very name of the group observance of the seventh day of the week Saturday as the Sabbath. He has thought to change the very commandment that was given to cause man to remember his Creator.

Did you notice that in this statement Ellen White directly contradicts Jesus? What did Jesus say when He was asked to identify the greatest commandment? Ellen White believed so strongly in the necessity of Sabbath-keeping that she asserted that only Sabbath-keepers would be able to resist taking the Mark of the Beast in the end times. The fact of the matter is that Sabbath-keeping was prescribed by God to the Jewish people. This law was never given to the Gentiles, nor was it given to the Church.

The Law of Moses was nailed to the Cross Colossians The death of Jesus inaugurated a New Covenant a covenant written on the heart Jeremiah and Hebrews In His teaching, Jesus emphasized nine of the Ten Commandments and expanded them in scope to apply to our thoughts as well as our actions Matthew He never commanded the Church to observe the Sabbath. When the Church began to convert Gentiles, the issue arose as to how many of the laws of Judaism the Gentiles would be required to observe.

For example, should Gentiles be required to submit to circumcision? The issue was so important that it prompted the convening of the first church council Acts If Sabbath-keeping was the most important of all commandments, why was it not mentioned?

References to these meetings can be found in Acts and 1 Corinthians Furthermore, Romans 14 makes it very clear that Sabbath-keeping is no longer a law. In that chapter, Paul states that we have the freedom in Christ to give spiritual significance to any day or not to do so.

What we do not have the freedom to do is to condemn those who give spiritual emphasis to other days than the ones we choose. Also, Colossians teaches that the Sabbath was a shadow of things to come. The reality it pointed to was Jesus.

Jesus is our Sabbath. We find our rest through faith in Him. The Seventh-Day Adventists have every right to worship on Saturday if they so please. What they have no right to do but what they have always done and continue to do is condemn those who choose to worship on Sunday. To me, a cult is a religious group that masquerades as being Christian. It employs Christian terms, quotes the Bible, and uses Christian symbols.

But it is not a true expression of the Christian faith because it teaches a false Jesus or a false Gospel or both. Our salvation depends upon our relationship with Jesus the true Jesus of Nazareth who revealed Himself to the world as God in the flesh John There is salvation in no other person Acts There is salvation in no other way except through Jesus John Cults are notorious for presenting a false Jesus. Reverend Sun Myung Moon claims to be the Messiah himself. The Mormons view Jesus as one of many gods created by the super-god whom they believe is an exalted man.

We can be wrong about many things, but if we are right about Jesus, we can be saved. Likewise, we can be right about many things, but if we are wrong about Jesus, we can be lost. The official creedal statement of the SDA concerning Jesus is very orthodox. He is affirmed as being part of the Trinity, and He is declared to be God in the flesh. His death, resurrection, ascension and second coming are all confirmed.

His atoning sacrifice is endorsed. So, on the surface, the SDA appears to pass the first and most important test. This is all very confusing. White, 31 but officially and publicly the Church has endorsed the orthodox view of Jesus. It would be refreshing if the SDA would simply drop all the double talk and unequivocally state that Jesus was God in the flesh.

There has been a similar doctrinal shift with regard to the Trinity. Many early Adventists were not Trinitarian. The official SDA hymnal published from until reflected ambivalence about the Trinity. The Nature of the Gospel The second characteristic of a cult is the proclamation of a false Gospel. Cults always end up teaching some form of works salvation.

This is the area where the SDA begins to definitely fail the test. As I have demonstrated, the SDA teaches a form of works salvation. The Type of Leadership A third characteristic of a cult is that it is based upon a charismatic founder who considers himself to be either the true Messiah or the last prophet of God.

The SDA certainly bears this characteristic since it was founded by a person who claimed to be a messenger of God. This gift is an identifying mark of the remnant church and was manifested in the ministry of Ellen G. This is a serious matter since the writings of Ellen G.

White are full of biblical errors, inaccurate prophecies, and downright silly commandments. Also, much of her writing is plagiarized. Her biblical contradictions are extensive in nature. She asserted that the plan of salvation was an afterthought of God following the sin of Adam, whereas the Bible says it was preordained before the foundation of the world 1 Peter She claimed that pre-flood humans mated with animals and produced a sub-human species that was destroyed by the flood.

There is no mention of this in the Bible. In fact, the Bible asserts that animals can reproduce only according to their kind Genesis She proclaimed that salvation for all sinners ended in when Jesus supposedly entered the Heavenly sanctuary. It was conveniently abandoned in She predicted that England would enter the Civil War.

She claimed she would be one of the , saints who would be living when Jesus returned. In she rebuked Bible scholars who were predicting an end time return of the Jews to Israel. Ellen G. White pontificated about every aspect of life in her writings, and most of her non-biblical comments are an embarrassment today. She denounced the eating of eggs, milk, cream, and butter.

In fact, she stated that eating eggs would make your prayer life useless! Russell currently serves as senior vice president and chief operating officer under CEO Joyce Newmyer, who will retain her position as president of the Pacific Northwest Region. She has been filling both roles concurrently, dividing her time between the hospital and her duties as the regional president. This leadership change will allow both Newmyer and Russell to focus on their respective roles.

Russell has worked at Adventist Health in Portland for 13 years. Prior to being senior vice president and chief operating officer, he was vice president for marketing and business development. His extensive experience is centered on high-quality, whole-person care with an emphasis on improving the health of surrounding communities.

He is also a fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives. He has served as board chair for the North Clackamas Chamber of Commerce, and currently represents Adventist Health as an active member of the Portland Business Alliance. He is also highly involved in his church community. Russell and his wife, Debbie, live in Gresham and have two adult children and three grandchildren.

Some among Traditional Adventists emphasize her writings to the degree that they become the infallible interpreter of Scripture, using them as a shortcut to biblical understanding. Many of these Traditional Adventists were, however, deeply disturbed by charges of plagiarism when it was discovered that significant sections of Mrs.

In a nutshell, it says that Jesus is now acting as High Priest in fulfillment of the Old Testament Day of Atonement, just as 2, years ago he acted as Sacrificial Lamb in fulfillment of the Passover. As our High Priest, according to traditional Adventist teaching, Jesus is doing two things. First, he is examining the heavenly records, determining who will be saved and who will be lost: those whose sins are forgiven are saved; those with unforgiven sins are not.

Second, Jesus is actually disposing of the sins of the saved. In Old Testament times, sins were forgiven twice daily, but they were carried out of the camp only once a year. Similarly, some Adventists believe, Jesus forgives sins as soon as we confess them, but he disposes of them only during the last days.

Early Adventists, it should be emphasized, did not make all this up. They believed in an inerrant Scripture, which could be understood by comparing one text with another預lthough that appeared sometimes to be irrespective of context and primary meaning. The doctrine produces some controversial theological by-products.

One of those by-products was the notion that although God had forgiven the sins his people had confessed through the centuries, he had not really forgotten them. They had been stored up to be used later against anyone who might backslide. Consequently, Adventists were taught they would need to achieve a sinless state before the Second Coming.

A third by-product was the idea that Satan as the typological scapegoat would in the last analysis bear the punishment for sins confessed by Christians. While evangelicals might agree that Satan bears some responsibility for sin, they asked their Adventist brethren what price Jesus himself had paid on the Cross, if indeed Satan would ultimately bear the guilt? Although the Adventist leaders of the s assured Walter Martin and Donald Grey Barnhouse that they rejected any of the questionable implications of this teaching about the heavenly sanctuary, some traditionalist Adventists have revived these and other harmful by-products of the theology.

No wonder evangelicals continue to be confused about Adventism. Traditional Adventism also has a distinct view concerning righteousness by faith. This view is in direct contrast to the view held by Reformation-oriented Adventists. Liberal Adventism: The theological perspective represented by Liberal Adventism does not arise out of the same doctrinal controversies as the previous two perspectives.

In the s and s, many Adventist students began receiving graduate degrees from non-Adventist universities. In many cases, the schools attended by these Adventists were theologically liberal. Thus, Adventist scholars were influenced by modern biblical criticism and liberal theology.

Liberal Adventists minimize the concept of forensic justification, the legal metaphor of God acting as a judge who acquits us of our sins because of the doing and dying of Christ. In essence, Liberal Adventism denies the view of the Atonement at the heart of the Reformation.

Unlike other types of Adventism, Liberal Adventism is comfortable with diversity of practice and pluralism of thought. The s have been a time of real crisis within Seventh-day Adventism as several representatives of Evangelical Adventism were fired or forced to resign because of their uncompromising views. Ford argued that that doctrine had no biblical warrant, and was only accepted because of Ellen G.

Adventism, according to Ford, had been raised up by God to emphasize, along with justification by faith, such doctrines as sabbatarianism, creationism, conditional immortality, and premillennialism.

Many Adventist administrators and leaders disagreed with Ford. As a result, his teaching and ministerial credentials were removed. In North America and Australia, Adventism lost a significant number of members預lthough just how many left is difficult to determine.

In the late s, Seventh-day Adventism was at the crossroads: Would it become thoroughly evangelical? Or would it return to sectarian traditionalism? As well, the liberal perspective, with its emphasis on pluralism, appeals to many Adventists. While Evangelical Adventism has lost ground in the s, its supporters remain, though they are not nearly as prominent today. Like any Christian group, if Seventh-day Adventism is going to be blessed of the Lord, its identity must come from a fidelity to the everlasting gospel.

May the leaders and scholars within Seventh-day Adventism have the courage to return to the good news preached by the apostles and the Reformers. May it not be said that Seventh-day Adventism is more sure of its denominational distinctives than it is of the gospel.

This strong disciplinary action sent shock waves throughout the Adventist denomination, and a significant number of Evangelical Adventists left in favor of independent Adventist and mainline evangelical churches. Ford, who spent nearly 20 years as a professor of theology at Seventh-day Adventist colleges in Australia and California, was well equipped to establish his ministry independent of denominational auspices.

He possesses two earned doctorates熔ne of them in New Testament studies from the University of Manchester under F. And he has written some 18 books on such varied topics as the Sabbath, eschatology, apologetics, and preventive medicine. While Ford continues to embrace a number of distinctive Adventist doctrines e. His gospel-centered preaching and strong emphasis upon health as a means of stewardship make him popular among many evangelicals.

She spent most of her life advocating a vegetarian diet even though she ate meat herself. She forbid the drinking of tea and coffee and the eating of mustard, pepper, pickles and cinnamon. And these are only a few of her many commandments. The Source of Authority The fourth characteristic of a cult is that there are always some extra-biblical writings that are considered to be equal to or superior to the Bible. The proclamations of Herbert W. Armstrong and Reverend Moon have been considered holy and infallible by their followers.

What is the status of Ellen G. This is a difficult question to answer. But all these orthodox declarations about the Bible are qualified by the creedal statement that the writings of Ellen G.

It is confusing, to say the least. Cleveland, one time Secretary of the General Conference. Cottrell in a talk to the Association of Adventist Forums. Cottrell was the former editor of the Adventist Review and served as a collaborator on the Seventh Day Adventist Bible Commentary series.

White was a prophet to the Church of Christ today. The superintendence of the Holy Spirit was just as careful and thorough in one case as in the other. And the inspired authority on which these and other doctrines are based, namely the Bible, supported by the writings of Ellen White, continue to be the hermeneutical foundation on which we as a church place all matters of faith and conduct.

Let no one think there has been a change of position in regard to this. I think this statement makes it clear that to this day the leadership of the SDA considers the writings of Ellen G.

White to be on a par with the Scriptures, and that is clearly a cultic characteristic. Attitude Toward Others A fifth characteristic of cults is their exclusivistic and sectarian attitude. They also tend to be secretive in nature as evidenced by the secret temple rites of the Mormons.

Once again, the SDA fits the bill. In her early writings, Ellen G. SDA leaders have toned down their public statement of these sentiments in recent years because of their desire to gain acceptance as a legitimate expression of Christianity.

Another motive has been the desire to gain access to Christian television and radio networks. Their strategy has worked, but the change in attitude is only cosmetic in nature. Although the SDA operates much more openly than do the Mormons and JWs, they are still characterized by a commitment to secrecy when it comes to interacting with the public. This is manifested in the way they try to hide their identity when attempting to communicate with non-members.

None of their media ministries identify themselves as being affiliated with the SDA. The seminars are always held at a neutral site like a hotel ballroom, and they literally sneak up on the audience with their SDA doctrines. Here is how a participant has described the experience:. They give you lots of free stuff to keep you coming night after night. Their publications do not reveal their SDA origin or affiliation.

Since beginning my in-depth research on the SDA, I have gotten on several of their mailing lists. I recently received a mailing from their number one media outlet, Amazing Facts. My goal is to encourage others to read the Bible and learn how to find God. This is deception, pure and simple.

The Type of Governance The sixth and final characteristic of a cult relates to governance. The cults tend to be authoritarian, dictatorial, and sometimes even totalitarian. Someone at the top either an individual or a collective group calls all the shots.

The classic example of this trait can be found among the Mormons and JWs. The SDA does not appear to be as controlling as these groups, but there is little tolerance for divergent views or independent thought.

The fate of Dr. Desmond Ford, mentioned earlier, is a good example of how rigid the SDA is with regard to doctrine. Christian or Cultic? So, where does this leave us? Is the SDA a cult or not? I have proposed six tests. The SDA failed all but one of them the one concerning the identity of Jesus. And there are serious questions about that one.

I am convinced that Walter Martin declassified the SDA as a cult in because he became convinced that they had an orthodox view of Jesus. To him, that was the acid test. White, is their final authority in all matters. After I concluded this essay, I decided to contact Dr. I asked him for a statement about the SDA, and this is what he wrote in response:. I was to have lunch with him the day he died in Many were, and there was hope for the SDA Church. The people who are now in control have moved the organization back to following the teachings of Ellen G.

White and denying some basic doctrines of Biblical Christianity. In fact, their official position is that if you do not worship on Saturday you are not a Christian and will not go to Heaven. Sunday worship is the mark of the beast. They are clearly today a false Cult.

David R. He holds several graduate and postgraduate degrees, has authored numerous books and widely published essays and papers, and is the host of the weekly television program, Christ in Prophecy, broadcast nationally and internationally on seven Christian networks, reaching hundreds of millions of viewers around the world.
